The European Union should get ready for intensified competition with China, India, Brazil, and other fast-growing economies, Lithuania’s Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has said.

Those and other issues will be discussed at the informal meeting of 16 EU economy ministers in Vilnius on Wednesday.

“The European Union should not just think how to compete with, let’s say, traditional competitors, like the US. It should pay increasing attention to its competition with China, India, Brazil, that is, with new fast-growing and strong economies,” Kubilius said in an interview with the Lithuanian Radio on Tuesday.

The participants of Wednesday’s meeting, who would include ministers from, inter alia, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Slovenia, Ireland, Romania, Malta, Slovakia, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia, and the Netherlands, will discuss possibilities to strengthen the EU internal market, to eliminate obstacles for business and to stimulate the growth of services and the creation of jobs.

Wednesday’s meeting will be the third gathering of the so-called like-minded ministers’ group. The first two meetings took place in London and Stockholm.
