Bishop Juozas Tunaitis dies at 84

Bishop emeritus Juozas Tunaitis passed away at the age of 84 on Friday, the Lithuanian Conference of Bishops has announced.

Born in Rokiškis district in 1928, Tunaitis graduated from Rokiškis Gymnasium with a gold medal in 1949 and studied mathematics and astronomy at Vilnius University in 1949-1950, before entering the Kaunas Priest Seminary in 1950. He took vows as a priest in 1954 and later worked in Palūšė, Dūkštas, Dubičiai, and Vilnius.

Since 1980, he has been working at Vilnius Archdiocese.

In 1992, Tunaitis was appointed as curate general to the Archbishop of Vilnius. He served in the position until March 2010.

According to the website of the Vilnius Archdiocese, Tunaitis served as an official of the tribunal at the archdiocese.

The public will be able to pay last farewells to Tunaitis at St. Kazimieras Chapel at Vilnius Cathedral as of Saturday. He will be buried in Vilnius on Monday.
