The exercise is starting in Poland on Friday. Two Lithuanian naval ships – mine search and neutralization vessel M54 Kuršis and patrol ship P11 Žemaitis - have left for the event. On Monday, the maneuvers will move to Lithuania's territorial waters and, for the first time, on the shore – Kairiai training ground and Nemirseta, the Defense Ministry has said.
"A landing ashore operation will take place in Lithuania for the first time on 11 June," reads the press release.
"The operation will involve US marines, Special Operations troops of Lithuania's Armed Forces, reconnaissance officers of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf, US warship Normandy, two US strategic bombers B-52, two German Air Force fighter jets PA-200 Tornado, two Lithuanian Air Force helicopters Mi-8, the joint Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian squadron BALTRON, Dutch naval diving team and two landing ships of the Polish Navy," the ministry said.
The exercise BALTOPS 2012, scheduled to last until 16 June, will involve a total of 12 countries: the United States, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, France, Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands, Georgia, Russia and Sweden. The exercises will take place in territorial waters of Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia in the Baltic Sea.
About 30 warships and 30 airplanes are expected to join the exercise aimed at improving cooperation among countries in a crisis situation.
