Algirdas Butkevicius: Non-transparent banking, not euro behind European financial crisis

The financial crisis in the eurozone was not caused by the euro but instead by non-transparent banking operations, which the European Union (EU) is now working to curb, Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said on Twitter on Friday.

Discussions on creation of a banking union and tighter requirements for banks have been topping the EU agenda over the past years, as the EU is searching for ways to prevent recurrence of financial shock.
