Analyst Gitanas Nauseda sees 60–70 percent chance of Lithuania joining euro in 2015

Gitanas Nauseda, an adviser to the president of SEB Bankas, Lithuania's biggest bank by assets, says that there is a 60-70 percent chance of the country joining the eurozone in 2015.

„The likelihood of us being able to do so currently is 60-70 percent,“ he told reporters on Thursday.

The analyst also said that Lithuania should consider following Latvia's example in cutting the VAT rate. „We can discuss this, perhaps we should do what Latvia did,“ he said.

Analysts at the Scandinavian financial group SEB, which owns SEB Bankas, are more conservative in assessing Lithuania's chances of adopting the euro in 2015.

„There is a 50-50 chance that Lithuania will achieve the 2015 target date (...). The country has decent potential to meet the budget criterion, but during the coming year it may be tricky to bring down inflation sufficiently,“ their said in their Eastern European Outlook report released on Wednesday.
