At least 42 mln tons of shale oil could be extracted in Lithuania

Oil production companies tacitly agreed with Juozas Mockevicius, the outgoing director of the Lithuanian Geological Service, when he said that the country should extract shale oil, which is very similar in its composition to conventional oil, the daily Lietuvos Rytas reported on Friday.

It is thought that at least 42 million tons of shale oil could be extracted in the country.

However, geological experts warn that shale oil exploration will most probably be protested against as well, because both shale oil and shale gas is extracted using hydraulic fracturing, a method opposed by the Greens and some communities in the western part of the country.

They also note that shale oil is more expensive to extract than conventional oil.
