Chevron and Diseta meet Lithuania's shale gas exploration tender requirements

The Lithuanian Geological Service has established that bids submitted by the US energy giant Chevron and Diseta, a local company, for licenses to explore for shale gas in western Lithuania meet all requirements.

Juozas Mockevičius, the director of the service, told BNS that the service on Monday submitted its assessments to a special commission.

"The Lithuanian Geological Service has examined all the offers and [...] established that two of the bids - one for the Kudirka-Kybartai field and the other for the Šilutė-Tauragė field - meet the requirements and conditions. The service today forwarded the two bids - submitted by Diseta and Chevron Exploration & Production Lietuva - to the chairwoman of the hydrocarbon resources tender commission," he told BNS.

The commission has ten working days to name the winners. It will then submit its proposal to the government, which will take a final decision, Mockevičius said.

"This will make it legally possible to issue a license and to negotiate or sign a contract," he said.

Chevron's Lithuanian subsidiary, Chevron Exploration & Production Lietuva, in January submitted the sole bid for the right to explore for shale gas and oil in the Šilutė-Tauragė field.

Diseta, a Lithuanian company founded in late October, and Perkūno Nafta, another local company, submitted bids to explore for hydrocarbons in the Kudirka-Kybartai field, but the latter bid did not meet the minimum tender requirements, the director said.
