EBRD resumes funding for Ignalina NPP decommissioning project

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ( EBRD) on Thursday resumed funding for a spent nuclear fuel storage facility project (B1), one of the key projects in the decommissioning of Lithuania’s shut-down Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), which was suspended temporarily last December.

Funding had been resumed in the light of the progress made in the implementation of B1 project and in the settlement of the issues pertaining to security matters, the Energy Ministry said in a press release.

“The resumption of funding means that our progress made in the settlement of outstanding problems has been acknowledged. Unfortunately, the projects B1 and B2/3/4 run behind the schedule and works continue at a sluggish pace. We hope that the management of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) will manage to make the contractor [Germany’s Nukem] speed up the works,” the press release quoted INPP chairwoman Daiva Rimašauskaitė as saying.
