EP committee recommends funding Lithuania's Ignalina nuclear power plant closure

The European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy on Tuesday recommended to further fund the closure of Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania until 2020, which is stipulated in the European Union's draft budget.

European lawmakers suggest using a legal basis which would later allow extending this support, Robertas Pogorelis of the European Parliament Information Office in Lithuanian told BNS.

Based on the draft multiannual EU budget proposed by the European Council, there are plans to establish a separate program for the closure of nuclear power plants in Lithuania, Bulgaria and Slovakia. Around EUR 400 million, based on current prices, are allocated for the closure of Ignalina facility for 2014-2020.

The regulation under consideration, which received initial backing of 52 committee members, with no votes against and six abstentions, does not stipulate changes to the amount of funds for Ignalina, but includes principles of spending of those funds and their supervision. The whole EP is scheduled to vote on it in May.

Under the consultation procedure, the EP's opinion on the matter is advisory for the EU Council.
