EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger: EU probe of Gazprom may be finished in spring

The European Union's (EU) investigation in connection to Russia's Gazprom oil giant can be finished next spring, Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger has said in Vilnius on Thursday.

"We have to wait how long our experts need, maybe spring next year, but I can't say which month or which day. But it's not a never-ending story. Our experts will come to an analysis in the next six months," Oettinger told BNS after meeting with Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė.

Oettinger emphasized that the investigation is not politically motivated but urged Gazprom to take EU rules liberalizing the market into consideration.

In his words, the European Commission is analyzing the practice and contacts between EU companies and Gazprom. It is a technical and legal case, not a political case, the commissioner added.

Earlier this month, the European Commission announced its plan to officially inform Gazprom of the suspicions resulting from the investigation into possibly unfair gas prices for Lithuania and some other EU countries.

The probe was opened in September last year.
