The power plant, which burns municipal and industrial waste and biomass to generate district heating and electricity, is the first of its kind in the Baltic countries, Fortum says.
"Using sorted waste as fuel in combined heat and power production is a sustainable solution for urban areas. It offers a cost-efficient answer to energy and waste management needs alike, and helps to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to depositing waste in landfills," Fortum CFO Markus Rauramo said in a press release.
The Klaipėda facility is the first of the four power plants that the Finnish group plans to launch in the Baltic and Nordic countries this year, he said.
Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė and her Finnish counterpart, Sauli Niinisto, participated in the inauguration ceremony in Klaipėda.
