Google’s Street View project will improve tourism and business environment in Lithuania, the representatives of the US Internet giant have said.

“Preparatory works for Street View have been completed. We believe that this project will be very useful for Lithuania,” Vytautas Kubilius, who is in charge of Google’s business development in Lithuania, said at a news conference in Vilnius on Thursday.

Ulf Spitzer, Street View program manager, said at the news conference that the service enabled its users to get a lot of information about the places they intended to visit.

“We have covered all largest cities and slightly more, the roads between large cities,” he said.

Lithuania was the 47th country worldwide to have this service available, Spitzer said adding that requests to update the existing maps had already been received although it was still unknown whether any additional images would be made in Lithuania.

“Two biggest existing problems concern visibility and accessibility. I think that this project will be fantastic for us in tourism business,” Evalda Šiškauskienė, the president of the Lithuanian Hotels and Restaurants Association, said at the project presentation.

Vilnius Mayor Artūras Zuokas expressed hope that Google would include the images of city parks and monuments in the service in the future.

The Street View cars taking pictures for the project started driving on Lithuania’s streets last June.

The project made a successful start in Latvia and Estonia last May.
