Lithuania has to promote investments and to take care of its fiscal policies in order to achieve economic recovery and growth after the crisis, Julie Kozack, the head of a visiting IMF mission, has said on Monday.

"Care needs to be taken of sustainable recovery. Investments, which we regard as very important for recovery, need to be taken care of," she said after meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.

Kozack said that investments were important for improving employees' productivity.

"Lithuania needs to further reduce unemployment and to have a productive and well-trained workforce. We believe that investments have to be developed and that productivity has to come from investments in the future," she said.

The IMF official said that Lithuania must also take care of its fiscal policies in order to improve its economic situation.

"We believe that it is very important for Lithuania to increase what we call fiscal relaxation, fiscal room. We think that there are many possibilities to do so, thus increasing Lithuania's revenue," she said.

Kozack said that Lithuania's aspiration to join the euro is a welcome one and should bring benefit to the country.

"We do believe that euro entry is an important goal for Lithuania. Of course, the entry date depends on Lithuanian people and the government, but it is very important to try to meet the criteria for euro adoption. Lithuania will benefit from euro adoption," she said.

Government to take note

Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has said on Monday that the government will take the IMF experts' recommendations into account, noting that many of them are in its program.

"The areas that were touched on, such as emigration policies, high unemployment and, certainly, the strict implementation of fiscal policies - all this is provided for in the government's program," he told reporters after meeting with members of the IMF mission.
