Latvia discovers horsemeat in sausages made by Lithuanian producer

Latvia’s veterinary service has discovered that some products made by Lithuania’s meat processing company Grimeda contain 9 percent of horsemeat. However, no sanctions will be imposed on the company, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

“We do not plan to impose any specific sanctions for the meantime. First of all, we will notify the Lithuanian company and the responsible authorities of your country so that they can carry out their tests. We plan to continue with checking other products sold by that company in Latvia,” Ernests Zavadskis, the head of Food Surveillance Department of Latvia’s Food and Veterinary Service, told the daily.

Grimeda would be required to label its products adequately, he added.

Meanwhile, Alfonsas Valatka, CEO of Grimeda, claimed on Tuesday that he had no documentation supporting those suspicions. “It is definitely not true,” he said.

Veterinary service finds no horsemeat in Grimeda’s sausages

Lithuania’s State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) has announced on Wednesday that it has so far found no horsemeat in sausages made by Lithuania’s meat processing company Grimeda.

The inspectors of Šilalė Veterinary Service took additional samples of Grimeda’s cold-smoked sausages marketed under the brand name Exclusive as well as extra samples of raw materials during the check carried out in response to a report from Latvia’s authorities about horsemeat found in sausages of Lithuanian origin.

No traces of horsemeat has been found in those samples, the VMVT says.

Meanwhile, the Veterinary Service of Klaipėda took five more samples of Grimeda’s meat products. Their testing still continues.
