Lithuania posts second biggest fourth-quarter GDP growth in EU

Lithuania's GDP growth rates in the fourth quarter of last year, both annual and quarterly, were among the highest in the EU, second only to those of Latvia, according to estimates released by the EU statistical office Eurostat.

Lithuania's seasonally-adjusted GDP grew by 1 percent in the fourth quarter from the third quarter, the second highest rate after Latvia's 1.3 percent. Estonia's economy expanded 0.9 percent, based on non-seasonally adjusted data.

Data from eight countries were not yet available. Based on available data, GDP in the EU-27 fell by a quarterly 0.5 percent. Portugal posted the largest GDP contraction, 1.8 percent.

In the fourth quarter year-on-year, Lithuania's GDP growth reached 3.1 percent, second only to Latvia's 5.7 percent. Estonia's economy expanded by 3.1 percent.

The Baltic countries, which were severely hit by the crisis, have been among the EU's fastest-growing economies for the past seven quarters.
