The panel said that it would in particular seek to assess the efficiency of competition in the natural gas supply market and identify the players with significant market power.

The commission carries out market surveys at its own initiative every five years.

Achema, which uses gas for its own needs, held the largest share – 54 percent – of Lithuania’s gas imports market in terms of imports volumes in the third quarter of 2012. Lietuvos Dujos (Lithuanian Gas) held 97 percent of distribution market, according to the market monitoring data collected by the panel for the third quarter of last year.

Other participants of Lithuania’s natural gas import market last year included Dujotekana, Haupas, and Kauno Termofikacijos Elektrinė (Kaunas Combined Heat and Power Plant, or KTE).

Lithuania’s gas imports originate from one external supplier, i.e. Russia’s Gazprom. Dujotekana buys gas from an intermediary, LT Gas Stream.
