Lithuania’s public spending overshoots target in defense sector, but comes below estimate in other sectors

Lithuania’s public expenditures, including European Union (EU) funds, last year exceeded the target in the defense sector and were below the projected targets in other sectors, data from the Finance Ministry has shown.

Defense spending, which accounted for 4.45 percent of the total government’s budget appropriations, last year totaled 1.085 billion litas (EUR 314.5m) exceeding the planned sum by 2.5 percent.

The economy, general public services and education accounted for 24.59 percent, 18.18 percent and 17.89 percent, respectively, of the total spending last year. Spending on the economy totaled 5.994 billion litas (11.7 pct below the target), on the general public services, 4.432 billion litas (4.9 pct below the target), and on education, 4.361 billion litas (1.4 pct below the target).

Appropriations on social security, which accounted for 13.3 percent of the total government budget expenditure, totaled 3.235 billion litas missing the target by 0.6 percent.

Total government budget expenditures, including the EU funds, made up 24.379 billion litas last year, missing the planned amount of 25.797 billion litas by 5.5 percent, or 1.419 billion litas.
