Lithuanian and Gazprom representatives to hold second meeting soon, Prime Minister says

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said on Tuesday that a meeting between representatives of Russia's gas giant Gazprom and the Lithuanian government would take place on Thursday, but later retracted the date.

Butkevičius said that an agenda for negotiations would be discussed during the meeting.

"On Thursday, I think, we are going to discuss a certain agenda, what will be discussed during negotiations and when those negotiations will start. They have a certain mandate that limits the range of issues they can talk about," he told LRT Radio.

Both Daiva Rimašauskaitė, an advisor to the energy minister, and Tomas Garasimavičius, the prime minister's adviser on energy matters, told BNS that they knew nothing about such a meeting next Thursday.

Evelina Butkutė-Lazdauskienė, the prime minister's spokeswoman, confirmed to BNS that such a meeting was being planned for the near future, but not on Thursday. She did not rule out that this time discussions could be more specific than those last Thursday, for example, about the objectives of negotiations.

Butkevičius said that a lower gas price was Lithuania's key demand.

Later on Tuesday, Butkevičius has corrected that the second meeting with Gazprom will not take place on Thursday and the date is not clear yet.

Asked whether the meeting with Gazprom’s representatives would actually take place on Thursday, he said: “The meeting will probably be held on some other day, I cannot yet tell precisely, we will still talk to those people who will take part in the negotiations.”
