The president said after a meeting with Minister of Energy Jaroslav Neverovič that businessmen take advantage of the disorder in the market, and consumer bills do not go down despite the fact that biofuel is significantly cheaper than Russian natural gas.
"The president drew the minister's attention to the situation in the biofuel market which needs swift and urgent solutions," Daiva Ulbinaitė, spokeswoman for the Lithuanian president, told journalists.
Meanwhile, the energy minister said after the meeting that the government's program stipulates strengthening competition in the biofuel market.
In his words, the situation in the biofuel market will be analyzed first and only then measures will be taken.
"I believe we will present our proposal in this area in a couple of months," Neverovič said.
Currently Icor-owned biofuel supplies enterprise Bionovus controls the largest share of the biofuel market.
Lithuania's law enforcement are currently carrying out an investigation into alleged fraud by the management of Vilniaus Energija (Vilnius Energy), owned by the French company Dalkia, who allegedly allowed Vilniaus Energija-linked Bionovus to gain profit by artificially boosting heating prices during purchase of fuel for heating production.
