Price of Gazprom’s gas for Lithuania may reach record highs next year

Russia’s gas giant Gazprom has recently unveiled to the shareholders its plans to sell 3 billion cubic meters of gas to Lithuania and Latvia for a “Japanese” price in 2014, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

The bad news was that the price might go up to record 600 US dollars (approx. LTL 1,600, EUR 463.77) per 1,000 cubic meters, the daily said. According to data made available by the National Control Commission for Prices and Energy, the average sale price of Russian gas as included in the tariff applied to Lithuania’s consumers totaled 1,291.6 litas in June.

Some Russian experts assume that a mistake has crept into the text of the proposal submitted by Gazprom to shareholders. They believe that the price was meant to be shown in US dollars, instead of euros specified in the proposal.

Daiva Rimašauskaitė, an adviser to the energy minister, told the daily that the ministry did not have any information about the price of gas projected by Gazprom for 2014.

“Our negotiators are currently trying to make sure that the price of Russian gas for Lithuania is lower than it is now,” she said.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius assures that reports about alleged increase in the price of natural gas supplied by Gazprom to Lithuania next year are wrong.

“This information is wrong,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

He admitted, however, that he did not have actual information about gas tariffs which Gazprom planned to apply to Lithuania next year.

“We don’t have actual information as yet since the discussions at the expert level are ongoing. That information is not made public,” Butkevičius said.
