Russian experts join criticism of Kaliningrad nuclear facility

The Baltic nuclear power plant being built in Kaliningrad has drawn criticism from some Russian experts, whose opinion somewhat echoes the position of Lithuania’s officials, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

“The construction of the Baltic nuclear power plant has been launched and continues without a project: there are no proofs that actual engineering and geological surveys, the evaluation of seismic risks at the site of the facility have been performed,” a report about the technical and economic terms of construction of the Baltic nuclear power plant, which was received by the daily, says.

The experts examining the ongoing construction of the nuclear power plant some 12 kilometers away from the Lithuanian border support some claims officially put forward by Lithuania’s authorities. In particular, they say that the study of the project’s environmental impact has not been coordinated with the neighboring countries. The report also says that the site of the facility falls within the zone of international flights to Kaliningrad.

“The air transport corridor above the nuclear power plant – this problem is the least discussed within the context of the nuclear power plant being built in the region of Kaliningrad. However, it might be the most important one in terms of security,” the report quoted Vladimir Milov, head of Russia’s Institute of Energy Policy and former Russia’s Energy Deputy Minister.
