Dutch-based Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors completed the project, worth 129 million litas (EUR 37.4m), within a one-year deadline, removing about 4.4 million cubic meters of earth.
With the project completed, the Dutch have begun, with some delay, dredging the port's channel at the so-called Kiaulės Nugara (Pig's Back) island, the site of Lithuania's planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.
With the access channel having been deepened to 14.5 meters and widened from 125 to 150 meters, Malku Bay, where Klaipėdos Konteinerių Terminalas (Klaipėda Container Terminal) is located, has become accessible to Panamax-type vessels.
