Vilnius fears Gazprom's bill for unused gas

Representatives of Lithuania’s authorities have discussed possible measures that could be taken if Russia’s gas concern Gazprom billed Vilnius for unused gas, as has recently happened in Ukraine, the Lietuvos Rytas daily reports citing informed sources.

“Our situation is exactly the same – we use less gas each year than we are obliged to, and we are getting ready for the shale gas revolution. Hence we shall get ready for any scenario,” a high-ranking government official told the daily on condition of anonymity.

The sources added that Gazprom’s executives had mentioned repeatedly that Lithuania was not using the whole volume of gas established in the existing long-term contract. The representatives of Lietuvos Dujos (Lithuanian Gas), Lithuania’s gas imports and transportation company, also liked to remind of that during unofficial discussions.

In line with the existing long-term contract, Lithuania is obliged to use around 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year until 2020. However, it actually uses 3 billion cubic meters, including the volume consumed by the fertilizer manufacturer Achema.
