Visit by Russian inspectors in May to decide future of Lithuanian food exports

A visit by Russian inspectors, planned for May 19 to 25, may determine if Lithuanian food companies can continue to successfully operate in the most profitable neighboring market or if the roads to the East are closed for some time, the business daily Verslo Žinios reports.

Giedrius Bagušinskas, the director of the Lithuanian Food Exporters' Association, says that if exports to the East are cut off, producers will have to look for alternatives.

"We would have to find our way into the Scandinavian markets, which are reluctant to let our products in. Other alternatives are Canada, the US, and Asian countries," he said.

All major Lithuanian meat and dairy processing companies export their products to Russia.
