European People's Party head: More united Europe should be among Lithuania's EU presidency priorities

Chairman of the European People's Party group at the European Parliament (EP) Joseph Daul says that a higher degree of European unification should be the main priority of Lithuania's presidency over the European Union (EU) Council.

He spoke before meeting with Lithuanian officials in Vilnius. EP President Martin Schulz and heads of EP groups are coming to Lithuania later this week.

"After an experienced Irish presidency, Europe also needs fresh energy from a country taking the EU helm for the first time. We count on the determination and success of the Lithuanian presidency, which hopefully will have one more main priority: a more united Europe," Daul said in a press release published by the political group on Tuesday.

He also expressed hope that the Lithuanian presidency would accelerate the decisions needed for financial stability, the final phase of implementation of the single market principle.

"I am happy to see that for a more credible and growing Europe; the Lithuanian presidency will focus on how to strengthen the base for financial stability and further develop the Banking Union framework for a deeper Economic and Monetary Union as well as on completing the Single Market. These are top priorities for the EPP Group and I look forward to seeing them reinforced by the Lithuanian presidency," the MEP said.

The EPP Group is by far the largest political group in the European Parliament, with 269 members and 3 Croatian observer members. It consists of center and center-right political forces.

Lithuania will take over EU Council presidency on July 1 for six months.
