Lithuanian Foreign Minister: EU wouldn't sign Association Agreement with Ukraine yet

Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius maintains that the European Union (EU) would not sign an Association Agreement with Ukraine, if it had to do it today.

"I have said more than once - if we were forced to decide today whether we can sign the Association Agreement (between the EU and Ukraine), unfortunately the answer would be negative. Because some tasks should be finished," Linkevičius told a news conference on Wednesday.

The Ukraine issue was high on the agenda of a meeting in Vilnius between Linkevičius and the visiting Danish European Affairs Minister Nicolai Wammen.

Wammen told Vilnius journalists that the EU would want the Association Agreement with Ukraine to be signed during the EU Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November. In his words, settlement of the issue in connection to Ukraine's ex-PM Yulia Tymoshenko would tip the EU in favour of signing the document.

"Ukraine should do more - that goes for democratic reforms, the justice system, it goes for selective justice and it goes for reforms in general. And, of course, we made it very clear that a solution when it comes to Tymoshenko case would be extremely helpful," Wammen said.

On Friday and Saturday, Lithuania's Linkevičius will be on a working visit in Kiev, which will include a meeting with Ukraine's President Vyktor Yanukovych.
