"The first month of the Lithuanian presidency showed our ability to come up with solutions that are necessary for Lithuania and the entire EU," the minister said in a press release.

"We are now convinced that we are fully prepared to perform the functions of presidency over the European Union Council. My opinion about the performance of the teams of negotiators is very good. The July results and the possibility to prepare for further tasks in August is a trampoline to the more intensive fall," Linkevičius noted.

In July, two councils – Economic and Financial Affairs and Agriculture and Fisheries – were held in Brussels, and were presided by Lithuanian ministers, namely, Finance Minister Rimantas Šadžius and Agriculture Minister Vigilijus Jukna.

According to the press release, the Economic and Financial Council approved legal acts on Latvia's accession to the euro zone starting in 2014, while the Agriculture and Fisheries Council agreed on the European Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Fund.

Linkevičius also presided over EU meetings with Macedonia and Kazakhstan.

The press release also highlights the agreements on the EU 2014 budget and the data protection negotiations with the US achieved on the ambassadorial level.

Lithuania took over six-month EU presidency on July 1.
