According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the documents, confirmed at a Cabinet meeting in January, were updated taking into account the Irish EU presidency's progress, information on potential new initiatives as well as information provided by the ministries on issues the Lithuanian EU presidency has no plans to present.
Remigijus Motuzas, the prime minister's deputy chancellor, has told journalists after the Cabinet meeting that, although the Lithuanian public's current focus is on future events, Europe will evaluate the success of Lithuania's EU presidency mainly by achievements in the area of legislation.
"The Seimas Committee on European Affairs needs to confirm the so-called legislative initiatives. We had confirmed around 200 of such initiatives and today confirmed another 360," Motuzas said.
Lithuanian ministers, who will preside over EU Council meetings, will have to represent interests of all EU member states but also properly present Lithuania's position, Motuzas said.
"It would be very bad if I presided over and produced a conclusion after a meeting and adopted a resolution which were totally non-beneficial or causing damage to Lithuania. This is why this negotiation position is adopted as to how our (Council – BNS) president should maneuver in order not to damage Lithuania's interests," Motuzas said.
Lithuanian is set to take over the rotating EU presidency on July 1.
