Lithuanian President: Czech EU presidency experience important for Lithuania

After joining the European Union (EU) together with Lithuania in 2004, the Czech Republic was one of the first newcomers to hold EU Council presidency, therefore, its experience and support will be important for Lithuania, says President Dalia Grybauskaitė.

Lithuania itself is presiding over the EU Council starting in July.

On Wednesday, the president met with visiting Czech Parliamentary Speaker Miroslava Nemcova.

In Grybauskaitė's words, EU Council presidency is a huge responsibility for Lithuania. Over the next six months, Lithuania will not only have to harmonize individual programs of the 2014-2020 multi-annual budget but also search for new instruments for handling consequences of the economic crisis and the growing youth unemployment.

The meeting also addressed presidency priorities and economic and cultural cooperation between Lithuania and the Czech Republic.
