Lithuanian president stresses importance of timely agreement on EU budget

At a meeting with European Parliament President Martin Schulz and members of the EP conference of presidents in Vilnius on Thursday, Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė emphasized the importance of timely decisions in connection to the 2014-2020 budget of the European Union.

During the meeting, Grybauskaitė presented the Lithuanian government and the key tasks for the country's presidency over the European Union Council.

In her words, Lithuania and the EU have a number of important decisions ahead of them, primarily, a timely agreement with the EP on the EU 2014-2020 budget. EU aid is crucial for economic development of countries, therefore, it is important to secure that all programs can be launched starting next year, the Lithuanian President's Office said in a press release.

"We can call this day an introduction to the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council and the beginning of actual work. The first steps are essential to ensuring smooth decision-making process. Cooperation with politically most important body of the European Parliament - the Conference of Presidents - will guarantee faster changes that are necessary for all European citizens," Grybauskaitė said in the press release.

The conference of presidents of the European Parliament, which consists of the EP president and heads of all EP political groups - represents all parliamentary political forces and adopts strategic decisions.
