"Lithuania, which was one of the countries of the European Union that made a significant contribution to prioritizing energy security and creation of a single European domestic energy market on the EU agenda, is proud to be able to directly contribute to building energy solidarity in Europe and trans-Atlantic relations," Kirkilas said at the conference “Energy Solidarity in Europe: Towards the European Energy Community.”
In his words, "creation of the European Energy Community by 2015 should become a historic event, as EU should then be free of any isolated energy islands and no EU member-state should be isolated from European gas and electricity networks."
"This should guarantee safe energy supplies at reasonable prices to our citizens and facilitate increased economic stability and business competitiveness in Europe," Kirkilas said in a speech, which was circulated by the parliament's Public Relations Division.
In his words, the NATO Energy Security Center of Excellence inaugurated in Lithuania a few weeks ago to analyze and provide consultations about military energy security should become a platform of NATO-EU energy cooperation.
