This year, the number of males contracting HIV is twice the number of females, 92 and 42 respectively.
All in all, 2,034 HIV cases, including 1,665 males and 369 females, have been registered in Lithuania by 1 November.
In the majority of cases (40.3 percent, or 54 people), patients contracted HIV through the use of injectable drugs, followed by heterosexual (26.1 percent, or 35 people) or homosexual (5.2 percent, or 7 people) sexual intercourse. The way of contraction in 28.4 percent of cases (38 people) was unknown. The average age of HIV patients this year is 35, the same as last year.
Over the entire period of HIV records, 1989-2011, 315 patients have developed the last stage of HIV, AIDS, and a third of these patients have already died.
