In 2011, the infection was diagnosed to 134 men and 32 women.
As of 1 January 2012, a total of 1,900 HIV carriers have been registered in Lithuania – the majority of them being male (1,573).
Most of the new cases of infection come down to sharing needles (86), while 38 people were diagnosed with HIV after having unsafe sex.
As compared with previous years, the number of new HIV infections from unknown sources has doubled from 16 in 2010 to 41 last year.
Twenty HIV carriers were diagnosed with the last stage of HIV – AIDS – last year.
New HIV cases were reported in all counties in 2011.
