2011 criminal activity incurred total damages of EUR 66 million

Almost 80,000 crimes were committed in Lithuania last year, inflicting damage worth almost LTL 230 million (EUR 66 million), the country's Prosecutor General's Office said in a report on Wednesday.

In 2010, the sum was almost LTL 165.5 million.

There were 2,471 crimes per 100,000 people in Lithuania last year, compared to 2,313 in Latvia and 3,176 in Estonia.

The report pays attention to an increase in fraud cases, property damage and destruction, smuggling, credit fraud, rape as well as crimes against children and family members, avoiding child support.

Meanwhile the number of murder cases dropped by 2.8 percent. The number of these crimes has been below the level of the 1990s since 2010.
