30 pct of children born out of marriage in Lithuania, 40 pct in EU - statistics

Increasing numbers of children are born to unmarried parents in Lithuania but the figure remains below the European Union's (EU) average, statistics show.

In 2011, children born out of marriage accounted for 30 percent of all newborns in Lithuania, as compared to 7 percent in 1999 and 22.6 percent in 2000. In the EU, the average number of such children is 39.5 percent, according to the EU's statistical agency Eurostat based on data for 1990, 2000 and 2011.

The EU's highest number of children born to unmarried parents is reported in Estonia (59.7 pct), while the lowest is in Greece (7.4 pct).
