"I believe it's a serious problem. We had to take care of six dead seals over the last weekend. We had not seen such a thing before," Liudvikas Dūda of the municipality of the western port of Klaipėda told 15min.
One dead seal was found on Friday, and another five were spotted on Saturday and Sunday on the beaches of three seaside towns.
According to Dūda, seals are most probably being killed on purpose as they create competition for fishermen. Shooting seals is allowed in Sweden and Finland. The municipality officials called for an investigation into the incident.
