British daily regrets cartoon insulted Lithuanians

In a letter to Lithuania's Ambassador to the United Kingdom Asta Skaisgiryte-Liauskiene, editors of Britain's The Independent expressed regret over the cartoon. According to the daily, the cartoon was absolutely not criticism of Lithuania, of Lithuanians or of economic migrants, the ambassador told BNS on Wednesday.

„The deputy editor said the cartoon was absolutely not criticism of Lithuania, of Lithuanians or of economic migrants. The letter further explains that the cartoon was aimed at certain discussions of the Labor Law at the British parliament, which are currently underway and have sparked a number of debates. In the end of the letter, the author expressed regret that the readers were offended,“ said the head of the Lithuanian embassy in London.

On Tuesday, Skaisgiryte-Liauskiene sent an open letter to The Independent, voicing regret over the cartoon picturing migrants from Eastern Europe and Lithuanians. The diplomat said the answer from the daily came later in the day.

„It seems to me that it is a very good response, it was fast and is, as a matter of fact, an apology,“ she said.

The cartoon published in The Independent on Tuesday depicts a plastic Tesco package of human bodies. Labels on the packaging reads Migrant Workers, Cheap Labor Value Pack, Produce of Eastern Europe, 2 for the price of 1, as well as Every Lithuanian Helps.
