Kaunas emergency doctors attempted to save a man who was reported to be laying on the snow under a bridge, Lietuvos Rytas daily reported. The man's body temperature had dropped to 21 degrees centigrade, all efforts to save him were futile.

Three homeless people suffered from hypothermia: two of them got their limbs frostbitten, and another was diagnosed with general hypothermia. They were all admitted to hospital, Panevėžys emergency unit told BNS. A homeless man was treated for frostbites to his feet in Šiauliai.

The cold spell claimed two lives in Lithuania last week – one in Alytus and one in Vilkaviškis.

Weather services say temperatures will remain well below zero this week, with nighttime temperatures dropping to -25 degrees Celsius in the end of the week.
