Court clears education minister's wife of all charges

A court in Kaunas cleared Edita Pavalkienė, wife of the Lithuanian minister of education and science, of charges brought against her. Prosecutors had asked the court to sentence her to 3 years in prison.

The court ruled that prosecutors had not provided sufficient evidence to prove charges of large-scale embezzlement and forgery.

After Friday's ruling, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius commented that the court put an end to speculations about Minister Dainius Pavalkis and his suitability for the office.

"The court has done its job and made a decision in this case, thus putting a period to political speculations about further management of the ministry by Education Minister Pavalkis, delegated by the Labor Party. The minister's wife has been cleared, therefore, there is no basis for doubts as to whether the minister can continue managing the ministry," the prime minister's words were communicated to BNS by his spokeswoman Evelina Butkutė-Lazdauskienė.
