Dozens of schools in Lithuania closed to flu epidemic

Dozens of schools have been closed in Lithuania due to a flu epidemic, representatives of local municipalities have told BNS on Tuesday.

17 schools are closed in the southern city of Alytus, and only one school out of 22 is open in the northern city of Panevėžys. There are 13 schools closed in Lithuania's second largest city Kaunas, with 8 schools and 87 classes in still working schools closed in the northern city of Šiauliai.

Only one schools is closed in the port of Klaipėda, and closing several others is under consideration.

The number of flu cases rose in all largest Lithuanian cities last week. The number of flue cases in Vilnius and Šiauliai doubled over the last week and rose 1.5 times in Kaunas and Klaipėda County.

180 people, including 29 children under two, 98 elder children, and two pregnant women, are currently being treated for flu in Kaunas hospitals.

Vilnius authorities are currently considering to a flu epidemic after 90 people, including 52 children, were hospitalized with flu last week.
