Ex-prefect of Moscow charged with money laundering fails to appear in front of Vilnius court

A Vilnius court could not hear the criminal case of former Moscow prefect Russian citizen Yuri Khardikov, who is charged with large-scale money laundering, on Monday after it turned out that the suspect was detained in Italy.

Khardikov's Lithuanian lawyer Aivaras Raisutis said at the hearing that the Lithuanian Embassy in Italy planned to submit a note on Khardikov's detention.

In the lawyer's words, his client was detained in a hotel last Monday. Raisutis said the detention was due to the fact that the Interpol data base did not contain updated information that Russia had dropped its charges against Khardikov in December 2012.

Khardikov has been detained for 15 days until Italian authorities establish whether the charges have indeed been dropped.

Khardikov, former prefect of the Russian capital, was charged with a fraudulent deal where former Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov's wife Yelena Baturina allegedly lost nearly 83 million litas (EUR 24.1m). The charges were later dropped.

Meanwhile, the Vilnius court is hearing a case where Khardikov is charged with legalizing money acquired unlawfully and unlawful operations of a legal entity.

Prosecutors say Khardikov transferred 10,398,333 euros to his personal and corporate accounts in Lithuania in 2009-2010.
