Vaidas Klumbys, the head of marketing department at DFDS Seaways, the Danish-owned Lithuanian shipping operator, told BNS that there had been no casualties and the cause of the fire was still unclear.

“I can tell this right away – there have been no casualties, that’s for sure. The ship is to get back to the port of Klaipėda at 1:30 PM,” he told BNS.

DFDS Seaways said in a press release that the fire broke out at around 2 AM Lithuanian time as the ferry with 301 passengers, 37 crew members, 48 cars, 2 buses, and 160 trucks and containers on board left the port of Kiel in Germany.

The Lisco Gloria, a ferry operated by DFDS Lisco, was destroyed in a fire in the Baltic Sea in October 2010.
