Following public outcry, Prosecutor General to review case involving Lithuanian Basketball Federation head

Lithuania's Prosecutor General's Office has decided to review an ongoing investigation handled by prosecutors of Panevėžys into alleged embezzlement involving the secretary general of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. Mindaugas Balčiūnas, who is suspected of illegal use of municipal funds to reconstruct a private hotel, has been detained along with two other people pending the investigation.

The Office "has asked Panevėžys colleagues to provide investigation materials for review." spokeswoman Vilma Mažonė told BNS on Monday.

According to her, the decision comes "in response to doubts in the public on the legitimacy of the pre-trial investigation into an alleged crime of corruption regarding the use of municipal funds for the reconstruction of hotel Romantic."

Last Wednesday, a Panevėžys court issued a 20-day arrest warrant for Balčiūnas. Prosecutors asked to arrest him for two months.

Darius Šimėnas, a deputy mayor of Panevėžys, and Romantic's owner Dalia Kuklierienė were detained for one month.

Prosecutors suspect there may have been a plan before the 2011 European Basketball Championship to unlawfully use municipal funds for reconstruction of the hotel owned by Via Unica company.

The FIBA Europe and the LBF have already expressed concern and shock over the arrests and accusations.
