The patient returned from India in the end of April and did not take any medication to prevent malaria. She started feeling ill on May 30 and was hospitalized on the suspicion of malaria. Blood tests did not reveal any malaria agents.

After a fever attack on September 8, she was again admitted to hospital and was given specific malaria treatment after malaria agents were detected in her body, the Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS said.

According to the press release, four people were diagnosed with malaria by September 23 after returning from Africa and India. None of them took prevention medication.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by blood protozoa, which causes periodic fever attacks. Malaria is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes.
