"This large-scale case is one of the major criminal cases Kaunas law enforcers have investigated in recent years. 21 people were detained during the investigation, and every individual's role in the criminal group was identified. 15 BMW X5 vehicles were confiscated and inspected," Nomeda Urbonavičienė, a prosecutor from Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office's Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division, said.
The accused would hide drugs in cashes inside the vehicles. Almost 300 kilos of drugs – cannabis tar – with a black-market value of 3 million litas (EUR 0.87 million) were found and seized. Drugs were smuggled from Spain, the Netherlands to Russia, via Lithuania.
The majority of the accused were arrested, and others signed written promises not to leave the country, were put under house arrest or were told to regularly report to the police. The majority of them face up to 15 years in prison, and the gang leader faces life imprisonment.
