Head of Lithuania's basketball federation and Panevėžys mayor suspected of embezzlement

Lithuanian prosecutors have brought suspicions against Secretary General of Lithuania's Basketball Federation, Mindaugas Balčiūnas, as well as the mayor of Panevėžys Vitalijus Satkevičius in a case of alleged illegal use of municipal funds for the reconstruction of a local hotel.

"Several suspects have been detained, including the secretary general of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, and the mayor of Panevėžys has also been questioned as a suspect," Panevėžys Regional Prosecutor's Office said on Monday.

The detainees are suspected of alleged conspiracy to illegally use funds of Panevėžys Municipality to reconstruct hotel Romantic, owned by company Via Unica, during the 2011 the FIBA European Basketball Championship.
