In union protest, Lithuanian border guards to subject border crossing vehicles to extreme scrutiny

As a form of protest, Lithuanian border guards pledge to subject all vehicles and people crossing Medininkai and Šalčininkai checkpoints on the border with Belarus to extremely thorough examination next Thursday evening. Border-crossing procedures may therefore take a long time, trade union of Lithuanian border guards has announced.

"There are risk factors that draw special attention in daily work. During the protest action, the precision will be stepped up. The examination will simply take longer – without violating any legal requirements or imposing additional procedures, we will closely watch everything," the trade union's chairman Vladimiras Banelis told BNS.

In his words, the form of the protest action follows an example of Western European countries, Germany and Italy.

"We have a number of restrictions – we cannot go on a strike as statutory officers," Banelis said.

This will be the contribution of the State Border Guard Service to the protest action held by the police and fire-and-rescue services outside the parliament and other campaigns held next Thursday to demand wage increase by at least a third, a 40-hour working week, overtime pay and compensation for the unpaid part of wages.

In connection to the protest action scheduled to take place between 4 and 8 PM on 21 June, the trade union said it has sent letters to Russian, Polish and Belorussian Embassies to Lithuania and the National Road Carrier Association Linava with calls for understanding and support.

The border guards advise travelers to pick other routes, if possible, on the day of the protest.
