"These are really huge changes in the fight against smuggling. Certainly, today I can't reveal certain information, but I have to say that large-scale smuggling has been investigated and the investigation will continue," Butkevičius told reporters after meeting with EU Commissioner Algirdas Šemeta.
"This covers not only Lithuania, but neighboring countries, other EU countries as well," he said.
"Yes, I'm speaking about what was partially announced yesterday," the prime minister said when asked if he was speaking about the persons linked to an oil product trade company, who were detained on Wednesday.
Butkevičius said that an international smuggling system had been created.
"This is not just a group. A system has been created, involving many companies not only from Lithuania, but from neighboring states as well. We can say that it is of an international level," he said.
Four persons linked to a large company operating in Lithuania were detained in Vilnius on Wednesday with 4.7 million litas (EUR 1.36 million) in cash. It is suspected that the money came from illegal international trade in oil products.
The prosecutor's office would not disclose the name of the company, but says that it is one of the largest companies in the country.
Vilnius City District Court on Wednesday sanctioned arrests of three suspects.
