Kaunas mayor slams decision to name plant after late Lithuanian president

Andrius Kupčinskas, mayor of Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city, says the government was not interested in the opinion of Kaunas residents when it decided to rename a local hydroelectric power plant after late President Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas.

"In this case, nobody asked the municipality. They didn't care about our opinion and most probably the opinion of Kaunas residents. They seemed to have rushed to give such a name as fast as possible without asking for an opinion," Kupčinskas told BNS on Wednesday.

Brazauskas, who died on 2010, took part in the construction of Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1958-1962.

He served as president in 1993-1998 and as prime minister in 2001-2008. Brazauskas led the Lithuanian Communist Party in 1988-1990.
