Lithuania - among least recycling EU countries

Lithuania and Latvia, as well as Romania and Bulgaria, had the highest shares of municipal waste landfilled in 2010, the EU statistics office Eurostat said in a report on Tuesday.

About 95 percent of municipal waste was landfilled in Lithuania, almost unchanged from 95 percent in 2009, and 96 percent in 2008 and 2007. This is the third-highest rate after Romania's 99 percent and Bulgaria's 100 percent.

Latvia landfilled 91 percent of municipal waste in 2010 and Estonia - 77 percent.

Lithuania has stated intentions to have at least 50 percent of waste recycled or re-used by 2013.
